Expert Diagnosis & Personalised Care from a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon
Worried about glaucoma or your risk of developing it? Early detection is the key to protecting your sight.
At our Glasgow-based clinic, Dr Young provides advanced glaucoma screening, diagnosis, and treatment tailored to you—helping preserve your vision for the long term.
Glaucoma is a condition that damages the optic nerve irreversibly, usually due to increased pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure). The optic nerve is essential for vision, and once damaged, sight loss is permanent.
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide—but with early diagnosis, it is highly manageable.
Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because:
It usually develops without symptoms
Vision loss happens gradually and unnoticed
Damage is irreversible once it occurs
✔ Regular eye checks can detect glaucoma before vision is affected
✔ Early treatment can prevent or significantly slow progression
The most common type. Develops slowly and painlessly over time.
A less common but urgent condition requiring immediate treatment. Symptoms may include severe eye pain, blurred vision, and nausea.
Optic nerve damage occurs even with normal eye pressure.
Caused by other eye conditions, injury, inflammation, or medications.
You may be at increased risk if you:
Are over 40
Have a family history of glaucoma
Are short-sighted or long-sighted
Have diabetes or high blood pressure
Have used steroid medications
Are of African, Caribbean, or Asian heritage
If you fall into any of these groups, regular glaucoma screening is strongly recommended.
Most people experience no symptoms in the early stages.
As glaucoma progresses, you may notice:
Loss of peripheral (side) vision
Difficulty seeing in dim light
Tunnel vision in advanced stages
Sudden severe eye pain
Blurred vision or halos around lights
Red eye with headache, nausea, or vomiting
Dr Young and her team offer comprehensive, state-of-the-art diagnostic testing, including:
Eye pressure measurement (tonometry)
Optic nerve assessment
Visual field testing
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scanning
Drainage angle assessment
These tests allow early detection of glaucoma early and precise monitoring over time to prevent any damage.
Although glaucoma cannot be cured, it can be effectively controlled.
